Think “good schools in Singapore” and places like Bukit Timah and Marine Parade might come to mind.
What you may not realise, however, is that these traditional education hubs in Singapore have welcomed a new precinct among their ranks: Aljunied.
Surprised? We don’t blame you. Aljunied is undergoing a transformation and has been quietly amassing elite local and international schools in recent years, with plenty more in the works.
While Aljunied’s status as an education hub is still a work-in-progress and relatively under the radar, it is on the fast track to becoming an ideal precinct for newlyweds and parents. Being in close proximity to schools is not just a matter of convenience, it is an opportunity for parents to future-proof their children’s future.
Here is what to expect in this new education precinct.
Aljunied meets the needs of parents
When it comes to hunting for a home, there is no doubt that you would want a location that offers an excellent child-friendly infrastructure for your kids, amongst other factors.
Proximity to schools is a factor that affects not just travel time, but also the chances of your children getting into their school of choice. Living in Aljunied can help you take your mind off these concerns as there is a cluster of both elite and international schools within its confines. From pre-school all the way to tertiary education and beyond, Aljunied has it covered.
To kick it off, Raffles Montessori (Aljunied), for example, which is led by graduates of Harvard University and Boston College, runs a full Montessori programme with materials approved by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). From Aljunied MRT station, it just takes 5 minutes on foot to reach the school.
There are also other childcare and early childhood educational facilities in the vicinity for your bub such as The Little Champions, ChildFirst @ Mountbatten, Heguru Education Centre and MindChamps PreSchool at MacPherson.
As your child moves on from pre-school and into his or her formative years, there is a handful of reputable schools in the area to consider. Geylang Methodist Primary School, for instance, is a kilometre away and only about a three-minute walk from Sims Urban Oasis; an upcoming condominium located at Sims Drive.
Others such as Kong Hwa Primary School, Canossa Convent Primary School, Cedar Girls Primary and Secondary School, and Geylang Methodist Secondary School are all either within walking distance or a short 10-minute drive from Sims Urban Oasis.
Should you want or need to supplement your children’s education, you can do that easily thanks to the availability of reputable education centres such as i3 Education Lab, Petite Forest Academy and Ingenium Learning Centre. All these are within a 10-minute drive from Sims Urban Oasis.
For non academic interests, there are enrichment centres such as Magic Fiddler Artz Academia, Juzmusic and Taekwondonomics. As well, Geylang East Public Library has a range of free programmes for children of all ages. You can conveniently get to these places by both public transport and car within 15 minutes.
As Aljunied is a premium city fringe location, it would be so convenient for you to get to town, which is a bonus. Apart from shopping and feasting, you could bring your little one out to places such as Bugis, City Hall and even Gardens by the Bay for some weekend fun or a learning journey. The National Library at Bugis should be your go-to should you want to explore, learn and get inspired. With its ever-packed line-up of exhibitions, storytelling sessions, arts programmes and even business events, you and your kid will have plenty to do together.
When your child is at the stage of pursuing tertiary education or beyond, he or she need not look too far from home too.
The fast-growing James Cook University (JCU) from Australia, has also just moved to a new campus located at Sims Drive to accommodate its present student population of 3,500. James Cook University is recognised as a full branch by its Australia counterpart, and won the coveted Edutrust Star, the highest quality mark that a private education institution can receive in Singapore.
Universities such as Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), Singapore Management University (SMU), and School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA) are also all easily accessible from Aljunied.
The transformation of Aljunied
As Aljunied is slowly morphing into a cosmopolitan precinct with the ongoing changes within and surrounding it, how will this affect residents?
For one, its proximity to upcoming commercial hubs such as Paya Lebar and Kampong Bugis allows residents to reap all the benefits from the new growth areas – both leisurely and in terms of investment potential.
If you’re thinking of upgrading, now is the best time to purchase a home in Aljunied as it is at the crux of the transformation, and Sims Urban Oasis is at the heart of it all.
Apart from it being a value-for-money purchase, Sims Urban Oasis could command a high rental demand due to its connectivity to the city centre, abundance of amenities and the new education nucleus, where the latter will also bring about a demographic change to Aljunied.
With Singapore’s top schools and international ones located within the precinct, this will draw expats who are attracted to the idea of settling down in the city fringe. This means that the once idyllic Aljunied will now be a meeting ground for both local and foreign cultures.
Residents can look forward to a lively “college town” vibe thanks to the presence of international schools such Nexus International School and EtonHouse, which have announced expansion plans around Aljunied; the former’s new $230 million campus will open right next door — 300m away to be exact — to upcoming condominium Sims Urban Oasis.
Nexus International School was also awarded the Request-for-Interest (RFI) site at Aljunied Road by Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). The RFI is an exercise that helps ease a crunch in quality schools for children of expatriates here. The award demonstrates Nexus International School’s holistic education offering, which meets the diverse educational needs of children of expatriates whilst attesting to the school’s goal of being the leading international education provider in the region.
The RFI exercise is in place to ensure that high-quality schools are present to help ease a crunch in school places for children of expatriates.
Students can look forward to innovative learning designed for twenty-first century learners, starting from pre-school up to International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.
A boost of vibrancy in Aljunied is a very welcoming thought, especially if you’re planning to build a home in this area. Be it for yourself or your kids, Aljunied has everything that caters to the needs of families.
